Margaret Wilkerson Sexton was born and raised in New Orleans. She studied creative writing at Dartmouth and law at UC Berkeley. A recipient of the Lombard fellowship, she spent a year in the Dominican Republic working for a civil rights organization and writing. A Kind of Freedom was on the long list for the National Book Award, a New York Times Notable Book of 2017 and a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice. She lives in the Bay Area, California with her family.
