The Go On Girl! Book Club Millenium Quilt

Assembled June 2000, Chicago, IL
For the year 2000 Millennium our Chicago sisters sponsored an old fashioned quilting bee as part of the Friday Night Mixer. In addition to books and reading, we surprisingly found out that a strong percentage of us also enjoyed sewing. Drawing from a strong African American contribution to the art of quilting within our cultural past, Chicago hoped that hosting an old fashioned, sit around the table quilting bee would provide a wonderful setting for our sisters that evening … and it was grand!

Chicago charged the entire organization to work on their individual squares for their chapter during the year. Taking a lesson based within the Crazy Quilt tradition, one that lends itself perfectly to the variety of women we have in the organization, chapters worked on their squares in earnest.

Then that evening, as we gathered around the table, we just held our breaths in awe, as one by one the small masterpieces were gently laid on the table. Though each piece was so different and unique, we started to notice the most miraculous little similarities!! The choices of colors that just blended effortlessly into one another, the hint of garnish that just matched, all of which quietly reiterated how we have a bond with each other beyond our books and our chapters.

The final charge was to have a keepsake that celebrates each member, to hand down through this millennium together. We prominently feature our quilt at each Annual Award and other GOG sponsored events and as new chapters come on board they are welcome to add their square.
