Author Awardees

2002 GOGs Author of the Year - Elizabeth Nunez

Elizabeth Nunez emigrated from Trinidad, where she was born, to the
United States of America after she completed secondary school. She is
presently a CUNY Distinguished Professor of English at Medgar Evers College,
the City University of New York, where she designed, developed and
implemented many of the college's first major academic programs. She
received her Ph.D. and Masters degrees in English from New York University,
and her B.A. degree in English from Marian College in Wisconsin. Since
1986, she has directed the National Black Writers Conference, sponsored by
the National Endowment for the Humanities. Nunez is the author of four
novels: Discretion, Bruised Hibiscus, Beyond the Limbo Silence, and When Rocks
Dance
. Bruised Hibiscus won an American Book Award in 2001.

2002 GOGs New Author of the Year - Michele Andrea Bowen

Michele Andrea Bowen, a first-time novelist, graduated from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a master's degree in both
history and public health. She lives in North Carolina with her two
daughters and she is the author of Church Folk.

2002 GOGs New Author of the Year - Lalita Tademy****Cannot attend the Awards Weekend****

Lalita Tademy is a former vice president of Sun Microsystems who
left the corporate world to immerse herself in tracing her family's history
and writing her first book, Cane River. Lalita's book, Cane River was
Oprah's Book Club Selection #42 and on the New York Times Bestseller list.
